"Ajari, the term Tyler renders as “Adept,” is a Japanese transliteration of the Sanskrit ācārya, meaning something like “master” or “preceptor” (or “adept”!). It was a title given to a relatively high-level monk of one of the “esoteric” (i.e. tantric) sects: either Shingon or Tendai. Sometimes the term referred to such a monk assigned to his clerical position by imperial decree."
